Step by step guide on how to manage oily skin

  1. Cleanse

Yes. You’ve heard it a million times before but cleansing your skin really does work as long as you do it properly. Wash your face with a gentle cleanser made for acne prone or oily skin to remove all the dirt build up. Do not scrub your face, instead just rub the cleanser on your face then wash off. Avoid cleansers that contain sulfates as they will dry out your skin and in return, your skin will produce more oil to compensate. Also, look out for cleansers that have ingredients such as salicylic acid, beta-hydroxy acid, glycolic acid or benzoyl peroxide as they help in clearing up blackheads and acne.

  1. Tone

Ensure that all the dirt buildup is cleaned up after cleansing by using a toner. This also helps in smoothing the skin’s texture and normalizing the PH levels. Again, avoid a toner that has a drying effect. Remember to avoid the eye area when applying it. And always pour the toner on a cotton pad and sweep it gently around the face without scrubbing.

  1. Lightweight Moisturizer

Having oily skin makes you to subconsciously stay away from oil or moisturizer. Actually, this is a mistake because your skin needs moisture and when you do not moisturize, it tends to go into overdrive and produce some more oil, therefore, making the problem worse. The key is to go for lightweight water-based moisturizers that are non-comedogenic (this means that they won’t clog pores) and oil free.

  1. Don’t forget SPF

If it is in the morning, then applying sunscreen is vital. This will help in protecting your skin from the harmful UV rays that cause premature aging. Go for one made for acne prone or oily skin, and choose one that’s lightweight non-greasy or a powder-based sunscreen. If it’s at night skip this part.

  1. Eye Cream

Pay close attention to your eyes as the skin around is thinner and more delicate than the other areas; thus making it more susceptible to damage. Choose an eye cream that provides broad-spectrum protection and one that’s made for oily skin.
